Configuring a Product

Once a product is found through a category or the quick search, user can begin to configure it. Clicking the product’s image or name will bring up the configuration screen. Once entering the configuration screen, navigation links and quick search field on the top of the page are still available. In addition, user will also see breadcrumbs displaying the trail of categories visited to get to this product. Clicking any of the previous categories will display the products or sub-categories that it contains.
Configurations are done through selections called Attributes. Attributes are specific characteristics that determine a product. Values are selected or entered for the attributes to configure the product. These values can then have prices that are used to give the product its total price. Attributes can be displayed differently, this includes drop down boxes, check boxes, radio buttons, entry fields (text box), etc.

Figure A - Configuring a Product

There are four sections on the configuration screen: Tabs, Configuration area, Responder, and the Link area. Each section plays a role in the configuration process.
Tab Area - Is displayed at the top of the configuration screen. Tabs are used to logically bundle product attributes. This guides user through the product configuration process. Choosing new tabs will display a different set of attributes used to configure the product.
Configuration Area - - This is the main part of the screen that contains all attributes used to configure the product.
Responder - DIs displayed on the right of the screen. The responder will display the selections made in the configuration area. The attribute’s name and selected value will be displayed along with any pricing that may be attached to the attribute. Configurable products may have required attributes. If some of required attributes are not selected configuration is incomplete and can not be added to the quote/cart.

When SAP CPQ displays the prices of Child products in the Parent product Responder, the system will do so without listing prices of individual line items belonging to the Parent’s Child items. In other words, SAP CPQ will treat the Child items’ line items as the Parent’s line items in bulk; this prevents the user from being able to see the price of each Child item’s individual line item.

Figure B - Status Incomplete

At the top of the responder is the current configuration status. This is a link with a display of either Incomplete or Complete. If status is incomplete, the color around the Status message is orange (or any other color specified in administration) and the status message contains a Show me why opens a list of unselected, required attributes and also colors the labels of attributes required for a complete a configuration. Tabs containing required unselected attributes are also colored.

The color of the responder, labels and tabs can be changed in administration (See Styles and Images).

Link Area - The link area contains three buttons: Start Over, Add to Cart and Compare. When finished configuring the product, clicking the Add to Cart button will create a new quote. The system will not allow creating quote with an incomplete configuration, though. Warning message will be displayed.
The Start Over button is used to clear all selections in the configuration and start over. It is important to know that there is no confirmation when resetting a configuration. So when working with large configurations user has to be careful not to accidentally reset everything.

When checkbox “Allow product configuration import” is selected, there is a section visible in Configurator with following fields: Download Template, Upload configuration, Apply configuration (Figure I)

When all attribute values are populated according to uploaded file, message “Uploaded configuration is successfully applied to product” is displayed to user (Figure K). When file is uploaded, product rules are executed.

When existing quote is edited, user is also able to upload template and all attributes that are in Excel file will be uploaded to existing item.

Tree Navigation in Configurator

Tree navigation makes it easier to configure complex parent-child hierarchies.
The parent product and its child products are displayed in the Configuration Tree tab in the Responder.

By clicking , you can expand and collapse the parent product and view all the child products. Moreover, you can navigate to any product within the configuration tree. When switching from one level to another using the tree navigation, the changes are automatically saved.
In addition, you can easily navigate to incomplete child configuration, as products that have incomplete children are highlighted. Even if you are in a child product, you are able to add the entire configuration tree to quote by clicking the Add to Quote button.

In the configurator, all required attributes you need to select or input to make product configuration complete get highlighted after clicking .
